For Optimal Results, Keep Teeth Clean During Ortho Treatment

Orthodontic CareYou’ve waited for this day for a long time – the day you get your braces removed! But if you haven’t cared for your teeth properly during orthodontic treatment, you might not be smiling. Braces can make teeth harder to clean. We get it. But a little extra effort during treatment can pay off in big ways when your braces come off. Dr. Elaine Whitney, Dr. James Whitney, and Dr. Tricia Robertson of Whitney Orthodontics tell you how.

The Culprit

Plaque is an invisible film that constantly forms on teeth. Typically, a good regimen of brushing and flossing prevents plaque from causing problems. If not removed, though, plaque can build up. The sugars and starches in the foods we eat “feed” plaque and cause acids to form. These acids eat away at tooth enamel.

The Problem with Plaque

Plaque buildup can accumulate around brackets. When this happens, decalcification can occur. Calcium is leeched from teeth to form white spots that may remain for life. When dental brackets are removed, they highlight this decalcification to make teeth appear “spotted.”

Another problem caused by plaque is gum disease. This chronic inflammatory condition can wreak havoc with oral health and has been linked to serious whole-body health issues. Early-stage gum disease is called gingivitis, and it’s curable with a deep dental cleaning and diligent care at home. If left to progress, gum disease can worsen to its most severe form, periodontitis. This late-phase gum disease is responsible for tooth, gum, and bone loss.

Prevent Problems During Treatment

To prevent problems during orthodontic treatment, brush and floss as directed by your dentist and try the products recommended to keep teeth super clean. Also, attend regular checkups and cleanings. A hygienist can remove hardened plaque to ward off gum disease and prevent problems from occurring. Eat a healthy diet, too. Proper nutrition can keep your body and your smile functioning well.
